Wait a second? Can tourists rent Tuk-tuks in Sri Lanka?

Absolutely! Renting a tuktuk in Sri Lanka is a fantastic way to explore the island at your own pace. Sri Lanka allows tourists to rent and drive tuk-tuks themselves, opening the door to unforgettable adventures for tourists across the globe.

However, it’s important to be aware of the requirements and considerations before hitting the road in your rented tuk-tuk.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

  • Rental: Choose a reputable rental company that provides well-maintained, legally registered tuk-tuks. Make sure the rental includes proper insurance coverage, especially for tourists as drivers. This will give you peace of mind while you explore.

  • Driving Conditions: Be prepared for Sri Lanka’s unique driving environment. Traffic can be bustling, road signs unfamiliar, and driving styles might seem more aggressive than what you’re used to. Take your time getting comfortable behind the wheel and prioritize safety on the road.

Entering the gates of Ambuluwawa

After reaching the gates of the Ambuluwawa tower in their tuk-tuk. they purchased the tickets and set their sights on reaching the tower itself. The 3km journey from the entrance to the tower, offered scenic beauty along the way, adding another layer of excitement to their adventure.

Tip: Some opt to hike up to the tower, while others who don’t want to hike can easily hire a tuk-tuk nearby. You can also go to the tower in your vehicle, as parking is available near the Ambuluwawa tower.

Time to Climb the Tower

Upon reaching the tower, it is now their turn to climb it. They entered through the main entrance into the building to find themselves an internal staircase.

Tip: When using the internal staircase, do not forget the designated viewing windows within the building. They are there to help you enjoy views from a different perspective. These serve as a wonderful introduction to the stunning natural beauty that awaits.

After ascending the internal staircase, they exited the building and paused to admire the breathtaking views. It was then that they noticed the external staircase nearby.

They knew the real challenge awaited: the external climb to the very top. They began ascending through the uniquely designed winding staircase. It offered stunning and one-of-a-kind views, but with a twist – each step got narrower the higher they went!

Even Janet, a seasoned adventurer, admitted to feeling a few butterflies. Their voices captured a mix of excitement and nervousness as they navigated the tight spaces and squeezed past people coming down. The climb got more crowded the higher they got, adding to the challenge. But fueled by the promise of a breathtaking view, they pushed on.

Finally, they emerged at the top of the tower, and they were not disappointed. The world stretched out before them in a breathtaking panorama – a reward well worth the climb.

After catching their breath and snapping some amazing photos, they carefully made their descent, the tight spaces feeling a bit wider on the way down, perhaps due to their accomplishment.
